Match Report
We headed back to Hever Castle Golf Club, which has become the traditional venue for our annual Captain's Day.
A total of 22 members joined us for the afternoon's 18-hole competition on the Championship Course, with 12 also taking part in the morning's 9-hole Texas Scramble on the Princes Course.
Firstly, a sincere thank you to everyone who attended. Your continued support, commitment and enthusiasm are what make these days such an enjoyable success, and they are very much appreciated.
The day began with the friendly Texas Scramble, where four teams battled it out over nine holes to warm up for the main event. It was fitting that our Captain, Graham Boniface, led his team to victory. Graham was joined by Richard Levett (making it back-to-back Texas Scramble victories) and Glyn Roberts, with an excellent winning score of 31 shots. Congratulations to all three of you, and well played to everyone who took part.
The attention then turned to the afternoon's main event – the prestigious Captain's Day Cup.
Following several weeks of hot, dry weather, the Championship Course was exactly as expected: firm, fast and every bit as challenging as ever. The greens, despite the dry conditions, were in excellent condition—lush, true and running at a good pace.
It was also fantastic to see so many members proudly wearing their choice of white, navy or sky-blue Foresters Golf Society polo shirts, giving the Society a smart and professional look throughout the day. As is now tradition, our previous major winners also wore their distinctive Green Winners' Polo Shirts for the evening meal, adding another special touch to Captain's Day.
The firm fairways and fast-running conditions certainly made scoring difficult. More than half the field failed to reach 30 points, with only six players bettering that mark, highlighting just how demanding the course was in the summer conditions.
Despite the tough test, there were still some outstanding performances.
A huge congratulations to Liam Sheehan, who produced a superb 39 points to become our Captain's Day Champion and lift the coveted Captain's Day Cup.
Runner-up was Pete Russell with an excellent 37 points, while Stan Craig claimed third place with 35 points. Very well played to all three.
Nearest the Pins went to Bruce Allman on the 6th, and Stan Craig on the 12th.
Congratulations to both.
No Foresters event would be complete without our now much-coveted 'Duffer of the Day' award. This honour went to Phil Simpson, who started brightly but unfortunately found the demanding back nine—and the summer heat—a little too much. Better luck next time, Phil!
All in all, it was another fantastic Captain's Day enjoyed by everyone who attended. Thank you once again to all our members for your continued support and enthusiasm throughout the season. It really is appreciated.
Finally, a special thank you to our Captain, Graham Boniface, for generously providing the prizes and helping make the day such a success.
We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our next meeting at Ham Manor Golf Club on Thursday 13th August.
