Match Report

Our seventh match of the season took us to Hill Barn in Worthing where we were competing for 'The Presidents Shield'. 

There were 30 of us that braved the 2026 heatwave with all of us making it to the end and playing the full 18 holes this time! Well done everyone!  a sincere thank you to everyone who attended. Your continued support, commitment and enthusiasm are what make these days such an enjoyable success, and they are very much appreciated.

Due to the ongoing summer drought, the fairways had little (if any) grass - more straw like and therefore the fairways were very firm which was a challenge with your ball traveling vast distances to normal and invariably rolling left or right - keeping your ball in the middle of the fairway wasn't easy to say the least. However, the greens were in a lush green condition with the ball running true. 

These conditions are proving truly challenging with half the field scoring 30 points or less for the second match running and only four players reaching 36 points or more! with two players finding the conditions suited to their game! Lol.

So, onto the results;  A huge congratulations to Gary Lock, who apparently played the best game of his life shooting an amazing 44 points with his lowest gross score ever of 89 to win the coveted Presidents Shield fittingly presented by our president Jimmy Gasson. Clearly these conditions suited your game. Well done Gary. amazing.

Runner-up  was Andy Jones with also with an impressive 41 points and in third place was your truly with 37pts. 

Nearest the Pin on the 5th also went to Andy Jones, and the inaugural 'Longest Putt' challenge introduced for a bit of fun went to Mike Ridley on the 11th with a putt of 15ft. 

Well done and well played all of you.

Finally, our now much-coveted 'Duffer of the Day' award went to Ken Donnelly but could easily have been any one of five players - that's how tough it was out there.  . Better luck next time, Ken!

All in all, it was another fantastic day enjoyed by everyone who attended. Thank you once again to all our members for your continued support and enthusiasm throughout the season. It really is appreciated.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our next meeting at Willingdon Golf Club on Thursday 17th September.
