Match Report
With the recent International behind us, we headed off to Woldingham for the first time and our ninth meeting of the year. We had another fantastic turnout with 29 of us, inc Andy Jone’s brother Steve as a welcomed guest. Thank you all for your continued support.
Considering this was a course introduced to the calendar for the first time, Woldingham certainly held up to its reputation of being a beautiful and well-maintained course - especially for this time of the year! and considering it’s a clay course, it was well drained and in immaculate condition with superb greens, which got faster as the morning dew dried. Although some tough holes on the front 9 with big banks sloping left to right, which meant finding the flat fairway both important and an advantage, it was also very open and therefore forgiving – unless you were unlucky enough to find the few trees! It was a delight to play and enjoyed by all. Definitely one to return to next year…..especially as the club kindly put a £100 credit on Alan Mesiner’s membership card, which he put behind the bar for us all to enjoy! Thank you Alan.
Before we started it was announced that there would be no ‘gimmes’ (a continuation of what was adopted on the International) and everything had to be putted out – even the 1-2-3 inchers! a decision that was welcomed and applauded by everyone and will continue going forward. If it can’t be missed, no reason not to put it out! This definitely didn’t slow play down and resulted in a very close field, with all but 3 players scoring over 30pts. inc 8 with 35pts. 6 with 36pts. 2 with 37pts. & then the top 2. Very close!!!
So on to the results. The winner of the ‘Brian Williamson Cup’ after 15years of frantically trying to get his hands on it rather fittingly and deservedly was Andy Williamson with 39pts…well done Andy, (you can’t have any room left on your mantelpiece!?),…. just pipping Runner Up Richard Brooks with 38pts, with Liam Sheehan in 3rd Place on count back from Tim Fuller with 37pts.
Nearest the Pins went Andy Tolhurst on the 7th and Alan Meisner on the 17th (members luck! Lol). Well played and well done to you all.
Not forgetting the winner of our new ‘Duffer of the Day’ award, although this was also very close and between 3 on count back! So I guess very unlucky?, was Mike Burnett.
All in all, it was another fantastic day out.
Thanks, as always, to all of you for your support and enthusiasm. It’s really appreciated.
